The Bulls did enjoy some success before Michael Jordan suited up in 1984. Coach “Red” Kerr’s Bulls made the playoffs the first 2 years of existence., and Dick Motta’s squad came within a game of the 1974-75 Finals. Bulls stars were plenty: Long Tom, Butterbean, The Jet, Stormin’ Norman, and Jerry Sloan. Artis Gilmore became a Bull after the 1976 merger. But despite Gilmore, the club wasn’t very good, making the playoffs just twice in the next 9 years. By the time Jordan signed to play for the Chicago Bulls, the club had no identity, a half-empty Stadium, and not much of an outlook.
